Beginning January 1, 2010 , all 1998 and newer diesel powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight up to and including 14000 lbs. (all vehicles except large motor homes) will be subject to biennial (every 2 years) and "change of ownership" smog check inspections. The testing procedure for these vehicles will differ slightly from current testing procedures for gasoline powered vehicles and will include a visual inspection to confirm the presence and connection of manufacturer installed smog reduction equipment, a scan of the vehicles on board computer to see if any diagnostic codes have been recorded and a "visible smoke" test to test for excessive smoke at the tail pipe.
Smog check stations are currently receiving information concerning diesel testing procedures and software updates to the smog check machine.
Consumers with qualifying vehicles, either diesel powered or gas, that fail a smog check, will still have the option of repairing the vehicle themselves or having repairs made at Official Smog Check Stations known as Certified Gold Shield Smog Check Repair Stations that have the special tools and training to effect repairs on diesel vehicles or apply to the Consumer Assistance Program and receive up to $500 worth of repairs, to fix smog check failures, at specialized repair facilities equipped and contracted by the state to perform repairs on diesel and gas powered vehicles.
